LadyCat Soccer a Work in Progress

January 5, 2014
By Jeff McGuire of Splendora High School

The LadyCat Soccer team took to the pitch for its first scrimmage against neighborhood rival Caney Creek on Friday evening. While the Caney Creek Panthers took the match with a 5-2 victory, coaches McGuire and Nixon were overall pleased with the LadyCat play.

"Defensively, we are still trying to find our identity," said coach McGuire. "Our midfield play was fairly controlled, but we struggled in the defensive third. We will continue to shift players around in the defense until we find the right mix," added Coach Nixon.

Stormy Dain had several quality saves at goalkeeper, while stopper Melissa Parker and midfielders Karen Velasquez, Sam Rouse, and Sandra Castillo moved the ball effectively in the attacking third. Castillo and Ana Zepeda both netted goals for the LadyCats. There were also three near misses from Parker, Rouse, and Natalie Chavez.

The LadyCats next take the field on Friday, January 10th, in the Lady Spartan Cup in Stafford. The first match is Friday at 6:00pm against host Stafford. On Saturday, the LadyCats take on Houston Reagan at 10:45am. The final match will depend on the outcome of the first two matches. Stay tuned for an update next weekend.
