CLEVELAND, TX - The Splendora Wildcat defense held the Tarkington Longhorns to short distances in the rushing game Thursday evening, as the Wildcats posted a comfortable 27-8 victory in the freshmen version for the battle of the bell.
Quarterback Abel Vidaurri went 6-12 passing for 84 yards and connected with 4 different 'Cat's receivers in the process. Receivers Brandon Brogran, Joshua Tarver, Tyler Johns and Kam Levis, all had receptions for the Wildcats. Johns had 47 yards receiving.
Splendora burned 6:20 off the clock on their first possession of the game with Dillon Vickers (who scored 3 TDs) going in from 3 yards out. The PAT sailed wide left and the Wildcats led 6-0.
Tarkington stormed right back with an impressive drive of their own as Quarterback Clay Jones called his own number enroute to a 7 yard TD scamper. Jones then went around right end for the 2 pt conversion and the 8-6 Longhorn lead. That storm quickly blew out and turned to little more than thunder as the Wildcat defense turned stingy.
Linebacker Ryan Roebuck and Defensive lineman Jonathan Gomez were ball hawks in the second half to help the rest of the Splendora defensive unit slam the door in the face of the Longhorns. Roebuck had 7 tackles to go along with an interception return of 40 yards. Roebuck now has 3 interceptions on the year, returning one for a touchdown. Gomez was instrumental in shutting down the 'Horns running game, garnering 5 tackles and continually shedding his blocker.
From the opening kickoff when Nicholas Gaunce drilled the Longhorn return man, until the final buzzer sounded, the 'Cats defense was in control. Tarkington managed a measly 22 yards runnning the football. Ryan Koblect, Riley Hulsey, Gordan Moore, and Emmitt Champagne all had multiple stops for Splendora. R.J. Gornick-Kizer had a big sack on a third and 4, which resulted in a 9 yard Longhorn loss.
The Wildcat defense wore down the Longhorn running game, as evident when Wildcat Samuel Castillo ran 'Horn RB Coltin Boatwright out of bounds early in the 4th quarter. Champagne recovered a fumble and Moore had a tackle for loss as well.
The Splendora running game performed well as 7 different Wildcats gained yardage. Led by Vickers 88 yards and 3 scores, Gornick-Kizer bobbed and weaved his way for a 23 yard score and Asa Spade chimed in with 25 yards on 6 carrries. Moore had 24 yards on 2 handoffs, while Rocky Anderson and Jay McCain also ran the football. Vidaurri contributed with 46 yards on 5 attempts. The Splendora Offensive line (The Mudcats) opened up gaping holes most of the night, paving the way for sustained Wildcat scoring drives of 83, 41, 60 and 47 yards, gobbling up the time of possession clock. David Vazquez booted an extra point.
