Pirates Rob 'Cats, 39-21
October 23, 2013Splendora High School
SHEPHERD, Tx - The Splendora Wildcats held a first quarter lead before the Shepherd Pirates rode the second half wave to a 39-21 win.
Shepherd's Royce See scored first on a 5 yard run with 9:56 left in the opening stanza, to stake the Pirates to a 7-0 lead. Splendora took a share of the lead when fullback Stacy Reneau bulled his way in from the 3 yard line. Gabe Luna's PAT was true and Splendora knotted the score at 7.
Six minutes later (still in the 1st), Luna would punch a 22 yard field goal through the goal posts to give Splendora a 10-7 advantage. Reneau squirted through the Pirate defense for 21 yards and the big play on the drive, which covered 43 yards.
DyeTavian Brooks would dart 35 yards for a 13-10 Pirate lead before the bands performed at halftime. Royce Creech's Splendora Wildcat band put on a great halftime show along with Sid Denman's dance crew, as they entertained the Homecoming faithful.
Cat's Jay Bradford's spirited running led to 146 half time yards on 18 totes. The second half found the going a little rough for the Wildcat team. The field seemed as vast as the ocean for Splendora in the 3rd & 4th quarters, except for a 60 yard 4th quarter drive. Wildcat kicker Luna booted a 35 yard field goal for Splendora's only points in the 3rd stanza, splitting the uprights to set the score at 20-13 in favor of Shepherd. Braeden Taylor rambled 15 yards for a score to end the 3rd quarter in Shepherd's behalf, 26-13.
Splendora's 300 pound sophomore lineman, Lucas Plate & company parted the sea with some big blocks at times, as Splendora moved the ball well between the 20s. With 4:07 left in the ball game, Bradford cannonballed his way to treasure island from the 29 yard line to close out the scoring. The final score was Shepherd 39, Splendora 21. Shepherd's quarterback See scored 3 times for the Pirates.
Bradford racked up 267 yards on 27 carries (including 6 runs over 20 yards) to lead all runners in the game. The speedy Bradford has now rushed for over 1,000 yards on the season.
Defensively for the Wildcats, Kevin Addison was credited with 11 tackles; 3 tackles for losses and a forced fumble, which was recovered by Freshman Dustyn Millican (4 tackles). Linebackers Michael Moore and Jesse Paschal hooked Shepherd for 21 combined stops. Stevie Reneau played well on the defensive line, popping the Pirates for 8 tackles. Also contributing more than 3 tackles were defensive back Austin Graham, Caleb Ray and Plate.
The Wildcats are back in action Friday, October 25 at 7:30 at Wildcat Stadium in the "Battle of the Bell" versus the Tarkington Longhorns in version #2 of Homecoming 2013. The original homecoming game was cancelled due to inclimate weather.
The key to this year's game could very well be the interrior line play of the Wildcats. Splendora owns the "Bell" by defeating the 'Horns in last year's gridiron matchup.
