JV Grabs Early Lead, Fall To Pirates
October 18, 2013Splendora High School
WILDCAT STADIUM, SPLENDORA, Tx - The Splendora Wildcat JV Football team put a scare into the talented Shepherd Pirates early, but the depth of Shepherd proved too much for the Wildcats to sustain in dropping the contest at home.
Splendora garnered the first score of the night on an 8 yard Cecelio Alvarado run around the end to make the score 6-0. The PAT attempt snap sailed high as 'Cats kicker Jonathan Rodriguez never had a chance to give it a boot.
Shepherd's bruising, speedy halfback, Benny Redman, a transfer from Humble ISD, scored on a 53 yard run with 3:04 remaining in the opening stanza to tie the score at 6 apiece. Kicker Steven Cook's EP try was true, giving the Pirates a 1 point advantage.
The Wildcats would score just 17 seconds later, using the R&R connection of Javier Rodriguez to Jonathan Rodriguez for a 78 yard strike and a 12-7 Wildcat lead. Jon-Rod made a beautiful catch in stride, grasping the back half of the football and sprinting for the score. The 'Cats try for 2 was nullified. Shepherd would score once more in the quarter, and at the end of the 1st quarter of play, led 14-12.
From this point on it was all Shepherd on offense as former varsity player, Colten Lilley summoned damage upon the weary Wildcat defense. Backed up on the 20 in their own territory, Splendora was forced to punt. The snap spiraled over the head of punter Jon-Rod for a Pirate safety. On the ensuing free kick, Pirate quarterback Tracy Pope returned the kick 53 yards for a TD. The Wildcats never recovered.
Offensively, the 'Cats were led by Alvarado, who churned out 76 yards on 19 carries and a TD. Zach Zweifel ran for 47 yards on 10 totes. Zweifel was 2-4 passing for 8 yards, just missing a would be 15 yard slant route to Donald Campbell. For Shepherd, it was Redman paving the way, running for 136 yards on 5 carries and 2 scores. Quarterback Tyler Hoepfl was 4-6 for 104 yards and 1 TD and also churned out a couple of scores via the ground. Kicker Cook was perfect on PATs, making all 7 tries.
Defensively, the Wildcats Wyatt Boehm had 5 tackles while cornerback Hunter Carsile had 5 with 3 solo stops. Noah Ramirez had a big stop near the goalline and Sergio Castillo registered 3 tackles. Jose Rendez also jumped in on the action from his defensive position. The Wildcat JV travels to pop hats with Tarkington next week, in a prelude to the Varsity's "Battle of the Bell", which Splendora owns the rights to after last year's victory.
