WILDCAT STADIUM, SPLENDORA, Tx - The Splendora Wildcats coughed up the football one time too many, as the visiting Shepherd Pirates eased out of Wildcat Stadium with a hard fought 12-6 victory.
Splendora's Emmitt Champagne had a huge day defensively for Splendora, mixing it up with the blue and white, while recording 11 tackles and a fumble recovery. However, it was not quite enough as Shepherd's Brenten Tingle rushed for 67 yards and 2 scores to lead the Pirates.
Tingle got the Pirates on the scoreboard with 5:58 left in the 1st quarter on a 44 yard run. The try for 2 was missed and Shepherd led 6-0. The Wildcats answered with 2:33 left in the 1st when tailback Gordon Moore turned on the jets and raced 45 yards for a touchdown down the sideline. The PAT was botched and the score was tied at 6.
The teams traded possessions with some hard hitting defense led by Splendora's Aaron Nowak and Ryan Roebuck. With 3:51 remaining before the half, Tingle broke a would be Wildcat tackle and bulldozed his way in the endzone from 17 yards and a 12-6 Shepherd lead. The Wildcats defense rose up and plugged the two-point conversion attempt on a big hit from Ryan Koblect with help from Rocky Anderson. The half ended with Shepherd holding the lead.
The second half was a defensive struggle, as the 'Cats couldn't sustain a drive. Both teams turned the ball over with Champagne recovering a fumble and Moore picking off an errant Pirate pass. Splendora had a chance to tie the score up with a little under a minute remaining in the first half. The Pirates marched 40 yards down the field, only to lose the ball on a fumble at the 10 yard line.
Offensively, The Wildcats ran only 25 plays for 104 yards as both teams churned out tough yards on the ground consuming long drives and eating up precious clock time. Shepherd ran 27 plays for 162 yards. Shepherd won the time of possession battle, holding the ball for 17:52 compared to the Wildcats 14:08.
Moore led the Wildcats in rushing with 2 carries for 45 yards and a TD. Moore also had a 78 yard kick return called back for an illegal block. RJ Gournick tucked the pigskin away for 31 yards on 5 runs, while Dillon Vickers chipped in with 19 rugged yards.
Both offensive and defensive lines were delivering punishing blows to each other all contest long. The Wildcat Freshmen take to the road next Thursday evening versus the Tarkington Longhorns. The bell rings at 5:00 p.m.
