Freshmen Win Streak Snapped
October 12, 2013By Joe Koesel of Splendora High School
COLDSPRING, Tx - The Wildcat Freshmen saw their winning streak come to a halt Thursday at the legs of the Coldspring Trojans, 38-14.
Splendora got on the board first with 5:40 left in the opening stanza on a 3 yard touchdown run by Dillon Vickers. The PAT was good and Splendora led, 7-0.
After pinning the Trojans deep on the kickoff at the Coldspring 9 yard line, Tailback Justin Wyatt sped 91 yards for a Trojan touchdown. The 2 PT conversion try was good and Coldspring took an 8-7 advantage.
On the next possession, Splendora put together a brilliant 10 play, 81 yard drive with Fullback Rocky Anderson pulling defenders the final 3 yards for a Wildcat touchdown. The PAT was again true and Splendora regained the lead, 14-8.
The quick striking Trojans would score :59 later as Darrell Levi scampered in from 9 yards out. Levi added the 2 PT conversion, making the score 16-14 as the 1st quarter came to a close.
Trey Lundy, Brock Barbay and Don Taylor got into the scoring act for Coldspring in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, as the Wildcats hit an offensive drought. Tragedy struck Coldspring when special teams player Preston McGinnis tackled Wildcat return man Gordon Moore after a nice Moore kick return. As Moore was attempting to turn up the sideline, McGinnis landed wrong, breaking his arm in the process. McGinnis had surgery and is currently recovering. The Splendora Wildcats wish Preston a full recovery.
Vickers rushed for 70 yards on 22 carries while Moore ran for 74 on only 6 totes, while the 'Cat offensive line opened gaping holes at times. The 'Cats were led on defense by Moore with 6 tackles. Ryan Roebuck and Emmitt Champagne had 5 tackles apiece. Tyler Johns and Kameron Levis had interceptions for Splendora.
The Freshmen Wildcats take to the gridiron next Thursday to smack pads with the Shepherd Pirates at Wildcat Stadium. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
