Wildcats Spoil Red Devil's Homecoming
September 17, 2013Splendora High School
HUNTINGTON, Tx - The pageantry of homecoming with the crowning of the king and queen, rekindling stories with past classmates forever enflamed with memories of years gone by and the smell of grilled burgers lighting up the night air was just what the Splendora Wildcats needed to serve as spoiler on this Friday night, storming to a 39-18 victory over the Huntington Red Devils.
'Cat's Quarterback Ty Nixon completed 5 of 10 passes for 95 yards, including a 14 yard strike to wideout, Matt Jacquinot at the 2:35 mark of the 1st quarter. Junior tailback Jay Bradford bobbed and weaved his way for 224 yards on 23 totes and 4 scores, as Wildcat dirty boys Anthony McMullins, Cody Long, Lucas Plate, Nick Falls (who would later leave the game with a possible knee injury), Justin Aldridge and Tony Espinoza paved the way for Splendora’s 324 rushing yards, in the 21 point win. Seth McCaleb, Eric Brocken and Lane Bennett (2 catches for 43 yards) also caught passes. The Wildcat offense erupted for 419 total yards. Both teams committed 8 penalties.
Huntington got on the scoreboard first on a 63 yard burst, but missed the try for 2. Splendora answered with 6:22 left in the 1st quarter on a 10 yard Bradford run. Gabriel Luna booted the extra point and Splendora claimed a 7-6 lead. The drive covered 51 yards.
Huntington again broke a big run, this time sprinting 68 yards to the promised land, but yet again missed the 2-point try. With 2:01 remaining before the marching bands, Bradford again got into the end zone on a 9 yard scamper and Luna’s P.A.T. was true and the Wildcats led at halftime, 14-12.
Huntington received the opening kickoff of the second half, but Splendora’s defense held and the ‘Cats took over on downs. Following a punt by each team, Splendora scored on a 36 yard drive when Bradford cruised in for a TD on a 7 yard bolt. Bradford took the handoff from QB Nixon and went in the end zone virtually untouched for the 2-point conversion and a 29-12 Splendora lead. The score was set up by Linebacker Tyler Whitmire’s interception of an errant ‘Devil pass to the delight of the Wildcat faithful. Huntington attempted only 2 passes on the night.
Placekicker Luna booted a 22 yard field goal to widen the Wildcats lead to 32-12 with 54 seconds left in the 3rd quarter. Linebackers Whitmire, Jesse Paschal and Michael Moore started laying the pads to the Red Devil runners. Paschal finished the contest with 21 tackles and 3 solo stops. Sophomore Cornerback Toby Clark played a solid game with 10 tackles and the hustle play of the year when he ran down the Red Devil's speedy QB after a 55 yard run and tackled him at the 2 yard line. The quarter ended, which allowed Clark and team the chance to catch their breath. The Wildcats made a huge goal line stand, stopping the 'Devils on 4 consecutive plays.
Huntington closed out their scoring for the night on their third run of over 40 yards with 9:44 remaining in the ball game. Splendora ignited the fight song once again just 10 seconds later on Bradford’s 36 yard blazer, his 4th rushing TD of the game. Luna split the uprights for his 4th consecutive P.A.T. and is now 8 for 8 on the season. This capped the scoring and pushed the final to 39-18, in favor of the Wildcats. Bradford has carried the ball 75 times for 591 yards on the year.
Caleb Ray, Kevin Addison, Stevie Reneau, Trey Kinard, Plate, Falls, Austin Graham, Ryan Mooreland, Brandon Bennett and Brett Rodriguez contributed with tackles for Splendora. The big stick of the night was registered by defensive back Dustyn Millican, as Millican pasted the Red Devils elusive tailback in the open field.
Coach Milam’s Wildcats host Stafford next Friday night at Wildcat Stadium for their own version of Homecoming. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
