October 5, 2013Splendora High School
SPLENDORA, Tx - The Splendora Wildcat's rally fell short in their home opener, as the Hawks of Hardin-Jefferson pulled off a 25-14 win at Wildcat Stadium.
The Hawks got on the scoreboard first on a 6 play, 60 yard drive. The PAT was missed and HJ led, 6-0. Following a 38 yard punt by Tyler Whitmire, the Hawks marched 72 yards, the final run being a long run by Hunter Cooley. The PAT kick again was muffed and the Hawks led, 12-0.
HJ picked up a Wildcat fumble and returned it for a touchdown with 9:18 left before twirler time and led 19-0 after the successful PAT. The Hawks closed out the scoring on a touchdown run. The 2 point conversion was no good and at intermission, the Wildcats trailed by 25.
The second half, however, was a different story. The Wildcats dominated both sides of the ball. Led by Linebackers, Michael Moore, Jesse Paschal and Whitmire, Splendora thwarted HJ drives the entire second half.
Splendora got on the board with a 1 yard plunge by Moore with 8:12 left in the game. Paving the way was Anthony McMullins and Nick Falls. Gabriel Luna booted the PAT for the Wildcats, making the score 25-7. With 1:21 left in the contest, Splendora scored again after a massive hit by cornerback Tristen Groh, causing HJ's Gieske to cough up the pigskin. Safety Trey Kinnard scooped up the ball and returned it 30 yards inside the 'Cats 25. After a short drive, Stacy Reneau dove in from 2 yards out behind the blocking of Cody Long, Justin Aldridge and Lucas Plate. Luna again kicked the PAT, rallying the Wildcats within 11 at 25-14. It was too little to late as the time expired.
Jay Bradford had 27 carries for 100 yards, Reneau chipped in with 43 yards and a score and Moore toted the rock for 23 yards and a TD. Quarterback Ty Nixon was 4-11 for 50 yards throwing and Groh tossed a halfback pass good to Toby Clark for 31 yards. Clark had 2 grabs as did Reneau, while Erik Brocken snaring 1 pass.
Defensively, the Wildcats were lead by Paschal with 10 tackles. Moore tallied 9 (6 solo), Stevie Reneau had 5, Freshman Dustyn Millican contributed 4, as did Brett Rodriguez, including 3 for losses.
Splendora travels to Hunnington next week. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m.
