LadyCats Take 1st District Win against Liberty

February 10, 2013
By Jeff McGuire of Splendora High School

The LadyCats took the field against the Liberty Lady Panthers on Friday night. Liberty jumped on the scoreboard first as their forward beat the defense and put in an arcing shot in the 10th minute. The rest of the half remained scoreless as both teams were unable to mount a successful attack.

In the second half, coaches McGuire and Nixon made some changes in the formation. This new alignment brought new energy to the LadyCats as they responded with several quality attack runs. Tanya Alvarado was able to net the equalizer in the 50th minute. "Our front four attackers put constant pressure on the Liberty defense," said Coach McGuire. "It resulted in many offside calls on us, but that is OK because it shows we were very aggressive in pushing the ball upfield." In the 60th minute, Tanya Alvarado netted her second goal of the night with a great assist from Sam Rouse. Five minutes later, Sandra Castillo received a beautiful through ball from Clarisa Ochoa to net the LadyCats' third goal of the night. "It is nice to see the girls putting into action the drills that we work on in practice," said Coach Nixon.

The defense also did a nice job of stepping up and shutting down the Liberty attack in the second half. Becca Smith and Nataly Chavez made several clearance passes that put the LadyCats back into an attacking posture. Lindsey Papuga and Melissa Parker did an outstanding job sharing goalkeeper duties, limiting Liberty to one goal.

The LadyCats host Jasper on Tuesday and Lumberton on Friday. Come on out to watch your LadyCat Soccer team in action!
