LadyCats Begin New Season on High Note
January 13, 2013By Jeff McGuire of Splendora High School
The LadyCat Soccer team participated in the Stafford LadySpartan Cup over the weekend. The LadyCats went 3-1 on their way to a second place finish. On their way to their runner-up finish, the LadyCats beat Brookshire Royal 2-1, Stafford 5-0, and Palacios 2-0, before falling to Navasota in the championship match 2-0. Tanya Alvarado led all scorers by netting 3 goals in the tournament. Goals were also scored by Sandra Castillo, Stormy Dain, Clarisa Ochoa, Sarah Olson, and Maria Santoyo. Stellar defensive performances by Sam Rouse, Rebecca Smith, Kaylea Cook, and Jacque Gonzalez kept the opponents out of our goal. Goalkeeping duties were shared among Jasmin Carreon, Melissa Parker, and Mikaela Quinn. The trio did an outstanding job of filling in for starting goalkeeper Lindsey Papuga who was out due to illness.
In this same tournament last year, Splendora did not score any goals and lost all four matches. Coaches McGuire and Nixon are ecstatic over the progress made in just one year. "From the beginning of off-season, we have been talking about making the district playoffs," said coach McGuire. "If we keep improving from this very good start, it should be a reality."
The LadyCats next take the pitch against New Caney (away) on Tuesday, January 15th, followed by the Porter Shoot for Glory Tournament beginning on Thursday. Come on out to see your fighting LadyCat soccer team in action!
