Home » Girls' Soccer NewsLady Wildcats Begin Season with a DrawJanuary 6, 2013 By Jeff McGuire of Splendora High SchoolThe Lady Wildcat Soccer team hosted Caney Creek on Friday, January 4th. The JV team was outscored 4-0, but coaches McGuire and Nixon saw some promising play from newcomers Gisele Lozano and Sandra Castillo. Captain Marleen Martinez played well in the midfield and communicated on-field instructions. Goalie Mikaela Quinn performed well in the first half, allowing only one goal. "The team will gel with more playing time and experience on the field," said coach McGuire. The varsity team held Caney Creek scoreless due to fine play in the defensive third by Captain and sweeper Jacque Gonzalez, defenders Kaylea Cook and Rebecca Smith, and freshman stopper Sam Rouse. Goaleeper Lindsey Papuga kept a clean sheet by stopping every shot on goal. "Lindsey kept us in the match with her outstanding play in goal tonight," said coach McGuire. "I only envision her improving as the season moves forward" Offensively, the Wildcats were also held scoreless. There were some spirited attack runs from forwards Clarisa Ochoa and Tanya Alvarado, but the shots were sent wide or right to the Caney Creek goalkeeper. "We need to work on getting our midfield more involved in the attack" said coach McGuire. "We will work on this aspect of the game during practice next week." The LadyCats will host Willis on Tuesday, January 8th. (Predicted inclement weather may move the match to Monday, January 7th. Announcements will be made at school and posted on this website if a decision is made to move the match.)
