SPLENDORA GIRLS SOCCER GET FIRST WIN
January 24, 2012By Brad Milam of Splendora High School
Splendora Girl’s Soccer Nets First Win!
The Splendora Girl’s Soccer team broke into the win column with a convincing 3-0 victory over a feisty Humble Wildcats team. The girls had been working all week on passing and shooting off the dribble. It was evident their hard work had paid off as Clarissa Ochoa was able to put in the LadyCat’s first goal of the season at the 20 minute mark of the match. The LadyCats were hovering around the Humble goal throughout the first half. Their persistence paid off as Vanessa Romero started a counter attack up the touch line and sent a perfectly timed through ball to Clarissa Ochoa who beat the defenders for her 2nd goal of the match at the 29th minute. Coach McGuire said it was as well of a timed play he has seen in over 20 years of soccer.
Coach McGuire opted for a goalie change in the second half as Jasmine Carreon came on to replace Lindsey Papuga, who then filled in for Florence Williscott at the sweeper position. The goalies combined for a shutout, helping to seal the win. With outside defender Amy Campbell consistently moving the ball forward and stopper Jacque Gonzalez and midfielder Isabella Becera commanding the midfield, the LadyCats systematically outmaneuvered the Humble Wildcats. In the 60th minute, outside midfielder Kaylea Cook intercepted the ball at the halfway line and beat Humble’s back line for the LadyCat’s 3rd goal of the night.
Getting that elusive first goal and win will help the LadyCats as they prepare for matches against Porter and Crosby this week.
