Four Things To Watch
Fondy Quarterback Play: While the Cardinals are in the midst of a three game losing streak to start the season, one bright spot so far has been the play of quarterback Jack Nejedlo. Nejedlo threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns against Appleton North in week one and also had a good performance (9-13 for 105 yards and 1 touchdown) in week two against Kimberly. SPASH’s defense will have to turn up the pressure to make Nejedlo uncomfortable and the Panthers’ secondary will have to cling Fondy’s talented receivers to mitigate the Cardinals’ passing game.
Offensive Struggles: SPASH has a good offense, at least an offense that has averaged 17 points per game thus far. But they have plagued by mental mistakes such as missing blocking schemes or procedural penalties that halter any momentum gained. SPASH will have to continue to work to clean up these mistakes as they march through the regular season and make a playoff run.
Defense Wins Championships: Though SPASH has had offensive problems, Fond du Lac has had their share of offensive difficulties through the first three games as well…and SPASH still has a stellar D. Fondy has averaged 10.7 PPG – SPASH has allowed 9.7 PPG (including a shutout over D.C. Everest). They have plenty of playmakers on defense and they should rise to the occasion against the Cardinals’ offense. Last week was a wake up call to SPASH (allowing 31 points to Menasha) and they will be implementing more substitutions to keep the defense fresh. Expect SPASH to keep sending blitz packages with their LBs: Winch, Duffert, and Van Helden.
Small Plays: SPASH has lived and died by their bread and butter plays this season – coming off a loss they’ll be looking to keep it simple against Fond du Lac. This game could provide a confidence boost for the Panthers’ offense if they are able to execute. Unless the Cardinals surprise the Panthers, don’t expect to see SPASH quarterback Mitch Mallek to be tossing bombs to his receivers. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, and the Panther most certainly are not “broke” after one game.
