Prep hockey: SPASH beats West to win Valley title

STEVENS POINT— Considering their seeding placements in the WIAA playoffs, there’s a good chance Stevens Point and Wausau West could meet later this month.
Only next time, a trip to the state tournament would be on the line. On Thursday, it was for the Wisconsin Valley Conference title.
Point won 2-0 at Willett Arena behind a standout effort from sophomore goalie Nathan Siclovan, who stopped all 32 shots and four power-play chances.
The conference title was the first for Point (19-3-1, 10-1 Valley) since 2007. For West, the loss was the second in three games since the 47-game unbeaten streak in league games ended Jan. 31 against D.C. Everest.
When the playoffs start next week, West (13-9-1, 8-2) will be seeded No. 1, and Point will be No. 2. And, with the sectional final scheduled back at Willett on Feb. 23, the teams could meet again at the same location with even more at stake.
“Everyone wants to go down to Madison,” Point coach Dan Francis said. “The nice thing for us is: As long as we’re playing, we’re playing at this rink. So, hopefully we kind of use that to our advantage.”
Austin Haas scored the first goal for Point 5 minutes, 27 seconds into the second period, and Jake Joworski added the second goal 5 minutes into the third, when he snuck a shot past West goalie Sam Wiegert from the left faceoff dot.
