Four different times, the Point/Rapids girls penalty kill unit kept Marshfield off the board.
It wasn’t until early in the third period that the Tigers finally got a break.
Molly Schuster flipped a shot at the net that Red Panthers’ goalie Emily Bubla stopped, but the rebound bounced off a skate and trickled in at 6:16 of the third period to steal a 2-0 Great Northern Conference win over Point/Rapids Friday at Ice Hawks Arena.
“Our penalty kill did everything to keep the puck out of the net and you can’t fault them for a bad bounce,” Red Panthers coach Rachael Graves said. “It’s tough when you have a hard fought battle and not have the bounces go your way.”
The Red Panthers’ penalty kill was so efficient that it even held strong during Marshfield’s 5 on 3 advantage.
And even with that many empty chances, the Tigers played on, patiently waiting for the right time to pounce.
“We’re far enough into the season that the girls don’t hang their heads if they don’t score on every power play,” Tigers coach Don Larson said. “I tell the girls that 100 percent of the shots that they don’t take won’t go in the net. They worked hard tonight on the power play and they just had to stay patient and we eventually got a bounce.”
Bubla saw plenty of shots in the fist two period, recording 19 of her 24 early in the game, while the Red Panthers peppered Alexis Straughan with 10 shots in the third period.
Point/Rapids pulled Bubla with 1:56 left to play hoping to tie the score and force overtime.
“We did everything we could think of to try and even the score up late in the third period,” Graves said. “I‘m proud of the way our goalie played and how hard the girls played. We’re a good team, we just have to prove it every night out.”
Third period: 1. M, Molly Schuster, 6:16 (pp); 2. M, Morgan Larson, 15:31 (empty net).
Saves: M, Alexis Straughan 2-2-10 — 14; P/R, Emily Bubla 9-10-5 — 24.
