Stevens Point–The first major tournament weekend of the season yielded some impressive efforts from many WVC teams and wrestlers. Last Saturday provided a good tune-up for many conference teams in preparation for the start of the conference dual season on Thursday.
D.C. Everest: Manning Denk (106) posted a 5-0 record to take first place in his weight class at the 16-team Watertown Early Bird Scramble. Jack Freix (120), Austin Helmer (138), and Joe Ziolkowski (145) each took second individually.
Marshfield: Mitch Hertel (145) claimed an individual crown as the Tigers finished third at the 12-team Campbellsport Cougar Invite. In total, nine wrestlers finished in third place or higher individually, including Luke Mahoney (132), Brandon Baltus (160), Mitch Zillman (195), and Brad Schroeder (220) who each took second in their respective weight classes.
Stevens Point: The Panthers opened up their season with a second place finish at the Kaukauna Duals. SPASH went 4-1 as a team, posting victories over Hamilton, Franklin, Ashwaubenon, and Valders before falling to host Kaukauna 45-15 in the final match of the day.
