Home » FFA NewsSmall but Successful ContestJanuary 4, 2012 By Lisa Moody of South Shelby High SchoolOn November 3rd the FFA Fall Area Speaking Contest was held in Kirksville. Four students from South Shelby’s FFA Chapter went: Rhian Beldon, Kellie Harvey, Shayla Detweiler and Michelle Greenwell. Their FFA Advisor, Mr. Larrick, accompanied them. For this contest their speeches had to be between six to eight minutes and afterwards a there was a five minute question round about their speeches and topics by the judges. To move to Districts (which was held at South Shelby) contestants had to place in the top two out of their category.      Kellie Harvey was in the Farm Bureau category and won first place, Rhian Beldon placed fourth in her category which was Sheep, Michelle Greenwell received fifth and Shayla Detweiler placed sixth. Michelle and Shayla both were in the category of Pork.    As a first time fall contest speaker Shayla Detweiler said that she learned about pork and built confidence with giving speeches. Though she did say doing a speech was a lot of work, she thought she did good overall.
