April 16, 2012
By Lisa Moody of South Shelby High School

Recently FFA competed at practice contest in Paris on Wednesday, March 7th. Teams had the opportunity to go to this practice contest if they were involved in Parliamentary Procedure, Knowledge, or speeches. South Shelby placed sixth overall out of 23 teams.
The Parliamentary Procedure team consists of Tyler Foster (Chairman), Michelle Greenwell, Kelsey Kendrick, Sandra Greenwell, Deric Bishop and Josh Miles with alternates Ryan Larrick and Bailey Lake, who placed second out of six teams. Parliamentary Procedure is when a team shows how to properly conduct a meeting. Competing in Knowledge, which this contest consists of Greenhands (Freshmen) who answer FFA knowledge questions, were Gabe Heathman, Amanda Carpenter, Kalyn Bishop and Angel Cleary, who placed 6th out of 20 teams. In the contest of Ag Sales those competing were Rhian Beldon, Ashley Coe, Jessi Mae Baker and Katherine Ensor. The goal had to try to sell someone their product and they placed third out of seven teams. In Extemporaneous Speaking Dustin Bird placed second. Lastly participating were Kaitlyn Chinn in Creed Speaking and Drew Woods who was in Division I Speaking.

Rhian Beldon who was the second high individual in her Ag Sales contest talked about her contest, “I think we did a great job especially for how little time we were able to practice. I see this team going far and a lot of success in the near future.” When asked what she said she’s going to do to improve she replied, “Practice, practice, practice! The only way to improve is to practice and become knowledgeable about your product.” Almost all contests have the same mentality if teams want to get better they will have to practice.
