South Panola heading to 9th straight title game
MADISON — Most people call it Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
But the folks in Batesville - especially the South Panola players - refer to it simply as "home."
And the Tigers are headed back for the ninth consecutive year.
Led by the strong running of Qyen Griffin and another dominant performance by its defense, South Panola steamrolled Madison Central 43-7 in the Class 6A semifinals before an estimated 8,000.
"We didn't really have a lot of home games this year, so it feels good to be headed back to our other home," said South Panola Dandy Dozen receiver Nick Brassell.
South Panola (14-0), ranked No. 1 in The Clarion-Ledger Super 10 and No. 1 nationally by rivals.com, will face No. 2 Meridian (14-0) on Friday at 7 p.m.
Friday's victory was the 26th in a row for the Tigers, who needed just 89 seconds to build a 12-0 lead.
The first score came after the Tigers kicked off and the ball danced down the sideline and the Tigers recovered. Griffin scored on the first play from scrimmage on a 2-yard run and the rout was on.
It was the first of four touchdowns for Griffin as SP led 35-7 at halftime while allowing just 97 yards of offense to the Jaguars (12-2)."We got off to a strong start in the kicking game and offensively early we were able to do what we wanted to do," said South Panola coach Lance Pogue.
