Charity Game to Benefit The Miracle League

The South Mecklenburg and Cox Mill baseball programs are teaming up with the YMCA of the University City to raise funds for The Miracle League. The YMCA of the University City is organizing The Miracle League to allow children facing serious physical and mental disabilities an opportunity to play baseball. On Wednesday, March 7, 2012, the South Mecklenburg Sabres baseball team will host the Cox Mill Chargers at Sabre Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., but activities to support The Miracle League will begin at 4:30 p.m.

In connection with this game, there will be numerous activities to raise funds for The Miracle League. All proceeds from these activities will provide monies needed to construct a custom-designed baseball field for The Miracle League. Some of the fundraising activities include raffles for $500 gas card, baseball gear and apparel, home run hitting contest, running the bases contest, etc.

Information about The Miracle League
The Miracle League at the University City YMCA removes the barriers that keep children with mental and physical disabilities off the baseball field and lets them experience the joy of America’s favorite pastime. Since the main barriers for these children arise from the natural grass fields used in conventional youth leagues, the Miracle League teams play on a customdesigned, rubberized turf field that accommodates wheelchairs and other assertive devices while helping to prevent injuries.

The University City YMCA’s Miracle League is expected to break ground this spring and hold the inaugural season this fall. The league will provide a baseball experience to youth and families in and around the Greater Charlotte area. Unfortunately, not all families can afford for their child to participate in an organized youth sports league. The YMCA does not turn anyone away due to the inability to pay and utilizes fundraised dollars to offset the cost of league participation.
