COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 6, 2014) – USA Volleyball is proud to announce its 18-player U.S. Women’s Junior National Training Team (WJNTT) roster, which will be reduced to 12 players for competition at the NORCECA Women’s U-20 Continental Championship set for July 6-14 in Guatemala.
U.S. Women’s Junior National Team Head Coach Tom Hogan and his coaching staff will have five outside/opposite hitters, five middle blockers, three setters and five liberos to select the final roster from for the NORCECA event.
"This is a group of talented and hungry athletes,” Hogan said. “They bring to the table a wide variety of backgrounds, international experience and expertise, and each will play an important part in contributing to the team. Our entire staff is honored to work with this talented group. We'll work hard and we'll work smart, and we look forward to representing our country with pride."
Outside/opposite hitters selected for the WJNTT are Molly Haggerty (Glen Ellyn, Ill., Sports Performance VBC), Hayley Hodson (Newport Beach, Calif., Tstreet VBC), Khalia Lanier (Scottsdale, Ariz., Arizona Storm), Courtney Schwan (Milton, Wash., Kent Juniors) and Alexa Smith (Monument, Colo., Colorado Juniors). Middle blockers are Orie Agbaji (Kansas City, Mo., Club North), Rhamat Alhassan (Glenarden, Md., Metro American VBC), Danielle Cuttino (Indianapolis, Ind., Circle City VBC), Audriana Fitzmorris (Overland Park, Kan., Invasion VBC) and Mikaela Foecke (West Point, Iowa, Fusion VBC).
The setter trio are Ainise Havili (Haltom City, Texas, TAV), Jordyn Poulter (Aurora, Colo., Front Range VBC) and Taylor Tashima (Wilmette, Ill., Wildcat Juniors VBC). The libero spot has Caroline Knop (Pasadena, Calif., San Gabriel Elite), Taylor Loyd (Centennial, Colo., Front Range VBC), Cat McCoy (Southlake, Texas, TAV), Jordan Pingel (Colorado Springs, Colo., Colorado Juniors) and Molly Sauer (Louisville, Ky., KIVA).
While it has no bearings on the final 12-player U.S. Women’s Junior National Team roster, many of these athletes have matriculated up through the USA Volleyball High Performance program. Fourteen of the 18 players were part of the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Training Team and nine were on the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team that won the silver medal at the 2013 FIVB Girls’ U-18 World Championship. The carryovers from last year’s GYNT to this year’s WJNTT are Cuttino, Fitzmorris, Foecke, Haggerty, Hodson, Poulter, Sauer, Smith and Tashima while Alhassan, Knop, McCoy, Pingel and Schwan were all on the GYNTT. In addition, Agbaji and Lanier were both members of the 2013 USA A1 National Training Team Program at the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Ft. Lauderdale Fla.
The WJNTT, comprised of athletes born in 1996 or 1997, will hold its second tryout May 29 to June 1 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. From that tryout, the top 12 players will be selected for the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team (WJNT) that will compete in the NORCECA Women’s U-20 Continental Championship. Before leaving for Guatemala, the WJNT will train in Minneapolis from June 29 through July 4.
