Collegiate Baseball H.S. Poll 3-10-14

OWASSO NO. 1 IN CB’S NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL POLL

Owasso BaseballTUCSON, Ariz. — Owasso (OK) High School is ranked No. 1 in the first regular-season Collegiate BaseballNational High School Poll after kicking off the season with two blowout wins.

The Rams, ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball pre-season poll, were undefeated for the first time in school history at 36-0 last season. 

Owasso now has won 38 straight games dating back to last season. The last game they lost was in the first round of the Oklahoma 6A state playoffs in 2012.

To open the 2014 season, the Rams swept Norman (OK), 7-0 and 14-1. In the first game, Braden Webb tossed a no-hitter and struck out 15. In the second game, Jeb Bargfeldt allowed only one hit and an unearned run while striking out 12. Jonah Bride went 3-for-3 with three runs. Owasso has gone to the Oklahoma 6A state finals in 15 of the last 17 years and won 9 championships.

No. 2 is Pensacola Catholic (Pensacola, FL). Last season, the Crusaders were crowned the national champions by Collegiate Baseball after winning 30 straight games. They began this season with a 6-0 record and currently have a 41-game win streak dating back to April 25, 2012. Since the last loss, the Crusaders have outscored opponents 346-63.

Through six games, PCHS’s pitching staff has allowed only five earned runs in 38 innings for a 0.92 Team ERA. In a recent game against West Florida, Evans Bozeman tossed a complete game and struck out 8. He also hit a towering home run to start the scoring in a 5-2 victory. He is 3-0 with a 0.84 ERA, 24 strikeouts, 4 walks in 16 2/3 innings for the season.

No. 3 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) started the season 3-0. In the first game of the season, Jack Flaherty shut out Westlake, 8-0. In six innings, he didn’t walk a batter and struck out 12. The Wolverine pitching staff has a 0.33 team ERA.

No. 4 AC Flora (Columbia, SC) went 4-0 to capture the International Paper Classic title in its first weekend of play. Flora defeated Georgetown, 8-2, Belton Honea Path, 3-1, Greenville, 3-1 and Summerville, 5-2. Louisville Slugger pre-season All-American SS Madison Stokes was named Tournament MVP.

Carroll (Southlake, TX) is fifth with a 14-1 record. The Dragons only loss was to Weatherford (TX), 2-1. After 15 games, the team’s pitching staff has a 1.04 ERA. They have posted 6 shutouts so far.

No. 6 Collierville (TN) is scheduled to open its season against Dyer County (TN) on March 10.

No. 7 Whitehouse (TX) is undefeated at 11-0. The Wildcats, who were ranked fourth in the 4A pre-season poll by the Texas HS Baseball Coaches Association, kicked off its season by going 6-0 to capture the Forney Tournament title. They had wins over Grace Community, Dallas Christian, Dallas HSAA, Garland, Texas High and Forney.

No. 8 Venice (FL) lost its first game of the season against Lakewood Ranch (FL), but has come back to win 8 in a row. The most recent victory was over Tampa Jesuit, 4-3. The Indians were held scoreless until the seventh inning when they managed four runs to push past Jesuit.

The First Academy (Orlando, FL) dropped to No. 9. They won 8 straight games to open the season before losing recently to Orangewood Christian, 3-1. In the first 8 games, Adam Haseley was 2-0 on the mound and was hitting .657 with two home runs and 11 RBI. Foster Griffin also has recorded 2 wins.

No. 10 Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches, FL) posted a 10-1 record to start the season. Recent wins include Pompano Beach, 10-3, Coconut Creek, 10-0 and 11-1 and American Heritage (Plantation), 5-0.

Parkview (Lilburn, GA) opened its season with a 3-1 record and is ranked No. 12. Their only loss has been to Marist, 6-0.

No. 14 Clovis (CA) rolled to a 10-1 start. The Cougars biggest test will come later this week against league rival Buchanan which is ranked No. 22.

No. 16 Fayetteville (AR) beat Conway (AR), 7-4 and 5-2 to kick off its 2014 campaign.

No. 17 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) has an 8-1 record. The Buccaneers recently posted wins over Zachary, 11-4, St. Michael (Baton Rouge), 11-1 and Notre Dame, 6-0.

Moving up to No. 20 is Greenway (Phoenix, AZ) which opened with four wins over Desert Edge, Goldwater, Apollo and Seton Catholic. The Demons have allowed only 1 run in four games while scoring 45.

No. 22 Buchanan (Clovis, CA) opened the season with 10 straight wins.

No. 25 DeSoto Central (Southaven, MS) started its season 5-1. DeSoto shut out two teams, but posted a loss against Hillcrest, 12-8 in its most recent game.

Rancho Bernardo (San Diego, CA) moves into the poll at No. 26. RBHS is the top ranked team in the San Diego Union-Tribune pre-season poll and No. 5 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports. The team boasts one of the top high school prospect in the USA in C Alex Jackson, who hit 14 home runs last season.

No. 27 is  Mt. Carmel (Chicago, IL) which will begin its season on March 27 against Brooks College Prep.

No. 28 is The Woodlands (TX). The Highlanders posted a 13-3 record to start the season.

No. 29 is Cypress Ranch (Houston, TX) with a 7-2-1 record. They tied 5-5 with San Angelo Central (TX), but recently shut out Cy Fair (TX) 7-0 and 2-0.
