Lady Dragons shooting for perfection

Well, there’s really nothing new to report about the Carroll girls’ soccer program. The Lady Dragons are dominating the competition again. The offense is explosive, scoring 65 goals in the first 16 games. The defense is suffocating, allowing only four goals entering this week’s games.

“I really like the way we’ve progressed throughout the year,” head coach Matt Colvin said. “We tied our first game against Belton because we started the season in one system. But we changed to a different system because we realized that we had the personnel to play in a different system. It’s really worked out well for us.”

That’s putting it mildly. All kidding aside, this Carroll team (15-0-1, 9-0 in District 4-5A) has clinched a playoff spot for the 13th consecutive year under Colvin. Now, the Lady Dragons are going for a perfect district record and another run toward the Class 5A state championship. They reached the 2013 Class 5A state championship game before falling to Plano West. Carroll played host to Justin Northwest on Tuesday and is away against Keller on Friday.

“We’ve had some good moments and some average moments,” Colvin said. “With the young group that we’ve had, I really like the way they have progressed. We’re just looking to continue to get solid play from everyone. We know there are going to be slip-ups. The idea is to minimize them.”

Not surprisingly, the Lady Dragons began the season ranked No. 2 behind Plano West in the Class 5A preseason rankings that were released in January. There have not been any updated rankings since then. But it’s likely those top two spots were not going to change anyway.

“This is not a typical Carroll team,” Colvin said. “I think this might be the fastest team we’ve ever had at Carroll. That means we’re going to be to do more things on the field that we couldn’t do in past years.”

College signings

Carroll always produces college-bound players so this is a good time to catch you up on who is going where in case you didn’t know. Of course, all of these players are seniors.

•  Defender Emma Scheffler has signed with St. Edward’s in Austin.

•  Defender Alya Shams has signed with Louisiana Tech.

•  Keeper Ellie Kemins has signed with Texas A&M-Texarkana.

What’s interesting about the Kemins’ signing is that she has been splitting time with junior Jamie Phelps throughout the season.

Time will tell if there will be any more signings.

Team leaders

On a team where scoring is spread out, sophomore Grace Cory has had a really strong season with 14 goals to lead the team. There has also been strong support from junior Danielle Dennis and sophomore forward Allie Luna.

The defense has been superb, led by junior defender Kylie McBride, senior Elise Landers and junior midfielder Nicole Sloan.

“It’s been a case where everybody has contributed and stepped up when we’ve needed them to step up,” Colvin said. “The players know their expectations and what we’re asking of them and they’re delivering.”
