Dragons vs Central
February 27, 2013Carroll Athletic Booster Club
Keller, TX - February 22, 2013 - K/J Horne
The Dragon Men visited Keller Central in greater Wautaga Friday evening for a match against the Chargers. The Dragons exerted their will on the home team during almost the entire first half, with multiple near misses sprinkled throughout. Ten minutes in, Tommy tossed a nice throw-in that almost went in on its own, while a couple minutes later Tanner lofted a nice corner that Paul almost headed in. Ricardo made his debut near the middle of the stanza and the energetic newcomer immediately contributed with outstanding positioning and hustle, and a near-assist on a great feed to Shane tearing down the sideline. The Dragon D was its forceful self, with Logan nipping any Central efforts in the bud, and Brad continually displaying his usual domination and ability to initiate transitions. With 12 minutes left, Tanner placed a nice free kick that bounced around the box seemingly for hours, but to no avail. On one of the few Charger advances, Turner made an outstanding save at the 7 minute mark. The last five minutes featured multiple long throws by Tommy that created several promising chances, and a nice run by Jack F, who encountered a double-handed push from behind near the 20 that set up yet another free kick that was almost converted by Tommy. To cap off a strong half, Turner made an impressive punch save off a free kick, and then snared a dangerous follow-up volley to deny the Chargers yet again.
In the second half, Carroll kept things under control with long strings of passes that kept the hapless defenders scurrying about in panic mode. Duncan showed some great moves retaining possession and getting free when double-teamed while Karl added his usual aggressive element to the mix. Tanner had an outstanding defensive play near the midpoint of the half on the Chargers’ premier offensive player, stripping the ball and starting a Dragon counter. With 13 minutes left, Central somehow snuck one in following an illegal side-of-head throw-in that found its way into the box and bounded miraculously off the back heel of an unaware and surprised Charger player. Despite that, the Dragons pressed on. Ricardo made a nice run and pass that resulted in a Carroll corner kick which was nicely placed low to the back post, only to somehow rebound off the knee of a confused defender. The last few minutes were a frenzy of offensive opportunities that fell just shy of success, and the Dragons ultimately fell one nil.
