Dragons vs Diamond Hill
January 5, 2013Carroll Athletic Booster Club
Southlake - January 2nd - by J/K Horne
A raucous crowd gathered on a brisk Wednesday evening to watch Dragon Men’s Soccer heat up the field with a 2-0 victory over Diamond Hill. The pregame festivities were highlighted by the soothing sounds of a remix of traditional standards emanating from the loudspeaker, assembled by our alumnus and master re-mixer, Keon Ebrahimi. Numerous other Dragon Soccer Nation alums were spotted in the crowd, lending support to this 2013 version, and laminated roster cards added to the atmosphere.
The Dragons dominated from the outset, narrowly missing several early scoring opportunities. Then just after 7 minutes into the game, Winslow chased down a perfectly placed pass into the right corner and then served a turf-burning laser toward a host of Dragons speeding toward the goal. Jack F firmly placed la pelota deep into the net for the first score of the young season. Meanwhile, the stout Dragon defense and midfield dominated play, denying goalie Turner even a single touch of the ball until almost 15 minutes in. All the while, Jack P, Jack F, and Tommy pummeled the opposing goalie with several near misses, often initiated by outstanding transition efforts by Tanner, Zach, and Brad. Michael F introduced himself to the Diamond Hill defense with a powerful effort late in the half off a Walker corner kick. Then, with eight minutes left in the half, Jack F weaved down the middle of the field, and chipped the ball over a defender to freshman Duncan Gary, who controlled it with his chest and knee before slamming it by the amazed goalie. The remainder of the first half featured frequent hustle plays by defenders Paul, Jake, and Kyle that eliminated any serious opponent threats.
Following a halftime in which the Dragon faithful partook of the concessions (staffed by our own Dragon Soccer parents and open each game day from 4:00 to 9:00 for all your dining needs…) the team came out strong in the second half. Michael F made an outstanding defensive play on a one-on-one opportunity 3 minutes in. Shane took out two opponents in the box, as only Shane can do, when he just missed a scoring opportunity a couple minutes later. Following a hard foul on Jack F, Tommy put a permanent dent into the right goal post, just missing on a free kick from 25 yards out. The Dragons generated multiple opportunities and corner kicks over the remainder of the half, displaying a depth of talent and technical wizardry that bodes well for the remainder of the season.
