Carroll Shows Depth By JV Taking Gold at Ken Garland Invitational at UNT

Varsity-2 takes Silver & Bronze 

Team has blend of experienced runners and newcomers

Denton, Texas (September 15, 2012) The Southlake Carroll Cross Country teams are deep as shown by their strong JV team wins on Saturday and the Varsity-2 team’s medaling. Backed by seven girls finishing in the top nine in place 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, the Southlake Lady Dragons JV Cross Country Team claimed victory with 23 points.  Not to be outdone, the Boys JV Team grabbed the gold with a perfect score of 15.  Southlake Carroll team’s performance is promising for the program’s future. 

 “Cross Country is about the team.  Having a combination of experience and newcomers is important to the success of our program.  Our Varsity-2 and JV athletes ran a solid race and delivered the win,” said Southlake Carroll Head Coach Justin Leonard.  

In the Varsity-2 Girl’s competition, Northwest was first with 55 points, Southlake Carroll took second with 81 points, following in third place with 105 points was Grapevine and in forth, Decatur with 122 points, fifth place Keller Central with 145 points, sixth place, Colleyville Heritage with 162. Kellee McCann of Northwest lead the Varsity girls with 18:09, Southlake Carroll’s Tig Archer second place (18:10) and third, from Northwest, Katherine Chavez (18:34).  Scoring positions for the Lady Dragons are Sam Young (7th), Laura Lashes (12th), Vicki Bottorff (24th), Rianna Randolph (37th), followed by Kate Brekken (38th) and Christine Knowlton (46th).

Southlake Carroll’s Boys Varsity-2 takes third (104), the leader, Keller takes first (48) and Northwest grabs second with 100 team points.  Keller’s, Austen Dalquist took first (15:36), Zach Kirkland of Northwest delivered second (15:45), third place, Jake McConnell of Keller (16:06).  Scoring for Carroll, Matt Carson (15th), Joseph Zapinski (18th), Eric Vetere (20th), Brent Aydon (23rd), Regen Hatcher (28th), and Timou (50th) and Ansel Richards (60th) finishing 6th and 7th for Carroll.

Miranda Roberts led the first place Southlake Carroll’s Girl’s JV team with an impressive second place finish, in 13:11, just behind the first place finisher Vanessa Mendez of Keller. Haley McFadden finished third with a time of 13:15, Sarah Odneal came in fifth with time of 13:17, Moriah Dadson grabbed sixth with 13:18, Holly Morgan 7th place, Kayli Jones delivered 8th and Julia Perry wrapped up the win with 9th place.  Grapevine JV Girls took second place with 92 points and Keller was a close third with 101 points.

In the JV Boy’s division, Southlake earned the gold with a perfect score of 15 points; Grapevine came in second with 58 points and Northwest finished third with 119 points.  Paul Baker led the team to the win with a 17:34, securing second place Alex Riera with 17:41, nabbing third place, Eric Karl with 17:45, seizing fourth place, Danny Vegel with 17:47, clutching fifth place, Jake Oldroyd with 17:48 to seal the perfect score, and in sixth place Kyle Polansky with 17:49 and tenth place Chase Haddock with an 18:08. 

The Varsity-1 boys and girl’s teams did not compete in the Ken Garland Invitational.
