January 11, 2013
By Tucker Kennedy-Studach of South Eugene High School

On Thursday 1/10, South Eugene High School's Sara Tsai repeated as Gatorade Oregon Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. The award recognizes excellence in athletics, academic achievement and exemplary character. Tsai has maintained a 4.0 GPA, has volunteered for youth soccer programs and the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

On the cross country track, Sara won the Class 6A State Individual Championship with a time of 17:42, the fastest time in nearly 20 years and four seconds faster than second place, becoming SEHS's first champ since Erin Gray in 2002. The sophomore finished fifth at the Nike Cross Nationals Northwest Regional Championships in 17:59.1 and crossed the line in 11th place at the NXN Final with a time of 19:52.

"Along with being a great runner, Sara is humble, kind and balanced," said South Eugene head coach Jeff Hess. "She is the perfect ambassador for the sport and a benefit to any group she is part of."
