The Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition (Sponsored by the University Interscholastic League)

Theme – African Americans in Texas : Past and Present

Entry deadline – March 1, 2014

College scholarship available

  • All students selected as state finalist will be eligible to apply for Texas Interscholastic League foundation scholarships (uiltexas.org/tilf).  Eligible applicants have access to dozen of scholarships opportunities; this school year alone, the TILF will be disburse more than 1 million in scholarships to almost 600 students.
  • The Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition is open to all students in grades 9–12 attending UIL high schools.  State finalist will be selected from essays entered.  In addition to scholarship eligibility, finalist will complete for state awards and will be invited to attend the Academic State Meet in May 2014.
  • Entry forms, contest guidelines and other important information are available on UIL website.
