Girls Swimming and Diving Preview
November 16, 2011
Southport High SchoolAfter finishing last year 5-5 (the best girls swim record since 2003) the girls swimming and diving team is looking forward to another great year.
The girls swim team took a hit at the end of last season after graduating multiple team leaders including Katy White, Lizzy Dart and Emily Odle. Combined the girls held the teams fastest times in 200 yard freestyle, 200 yard individual medley, 100 yard butterfly, 100 yard freestyle, 500 yard freestyle and 100 yard breast stroke, dominating six of the eleven events hosted at the swim meets.
Last year the girls had one diver, sophomore Savanna Hickle. Hickle has returned to compete again this season in 1 meter diving.
Although the team lost many leaders they have been consistently dominated by underclassmen and that fact remains to be true. Nine of the 15 athletes last year were underclassmen and all have returned this year to step up and contribute to the team’s success.
“A big focus on technique is the key to success this year,” head coach Mr. Matt Jeffries said.
The girls first meet of the year is this Thursday Nov. 17, show up and support the team.
