Cards score in final minute to come out with a win

The Southport football Cardinals took on the Bloomington South Panthers in the Horseshoe Classic at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 17. The Cardinals rallied around a second half comeback to defeat the Panthers, 35-28.
The Cards started off the game slow. At the end of the first half Bloomington South was up 20-8. The second half was a different story for the Cards. Southport came out and outscored the Panthers 27-8 in the second half. The Cardinals came down on the last drive of the game a scored a touchdown to take the lead with under a minute left in the game.
“We were very happy to win the game,” said head coach Mr. Bill Peebles. “We felt like the second half we came out and played much better. We didn’t come out in the first half and play very strongly. Defensively we played made in the second half to win the game.”
Offensively the Cards were led on the ground by sophomore Christian Perry. Perry had 173 yards on 26 carries and also added one touchdown. Sophomore Chinoya Phiri had 90 yards on the ground and had two touchdowns on the day. Senior Kellon Thomas went five for 12 with 64 yards and one touchdown through the air. On the ground Thomas had 84 yards rushing and one touchdown. The Cardinals had a total of 347 yards rushing in the game.
The Cards next game is the Homecoming game which is on Friday, Sept. 23 against Franklin Central. FC is coming with a loss from a loss against Perry Meridian. The game will be played at Perry Township Stadium and the game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The Homecoming Parade and festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m.
