Boys volleyball team loses four straight despite close sets

April 22, 2014
By Nick Holland of Southport High School

The boys volleyball team challenged the number-one ranked team in the state, Roncalli, last week. Though the team lost 3-0 the games were “very close” according to sponsor, and coach Mr. Joe Leonard. The teams were tied 19-19 at one point in the first set, but failed to seal the deal.

“I was proud of how much we had improved,” Leonard said. “We scored more this time than we did last time, so there are always positives.”

Sophomore starter Evan Higgs thought the team did well despite the challenges.

“We did the best we could even though it was Roncalli,” Higgs said. “I was happy with the way we performed this time.”

The team then traveled to Franklin Community on Saturday for a quad meet with the host, Lafayette Jeff and Zionsville.

Though the team lost all three of their matches, Leonard was content with the way the team competed.

“I thought we did a solid job at times,” Leonard said. “I just wish we had played a lot better overall.”

The team’s record is now 6-15. The team’s next game is today, Tuesday April 22. They will travel to HSE. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
