April 16, 2014
Southport High School

The boys baseball team beat North Central last Friday 16-8. Controversial play in the first inning when senior AJ Wampler hit the ball to centerfield and North Central’s centerfielder dove to make the catch, but the umpire called “no catch” and the Cards scored three runs off that hit. The North Central centerfielder lead off the next inning hitting, but once he reached base he made a comment to the umpire and was tossed out of the game along with the head coach.

The game later was tied 3-3 at the end of the third. The Cards lead hitters were seniors Wyatt Cullom and Wampler, each with 3 hits. The teams totaled 14 hits, 13 RBI’s, three doubles and a .424 batting average. The game stayed tied until the Cards got 11 runs in the seventh inning.

“In the seventh inning we got a couple of guys on as well as them walking some, and we just kept hitting the ball,” head coach Scott Whitlock said.

The team’s next game will be tonight against Cathedral. The game will be at Cathedral and is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
