Boys volleyball team has up and down week
April 16, 2014By Nick Holland of Southport High School
The boys volleyball team beat then 3rd-ranked Wapahani last week. Winning the last set in dramatic fashion.
Coach Mr. Joseph Leonard said the game was extremely intense.
“It was overall a really hard fought win,” Leonard said. “I liked the team’s fight and was proud of the way we performed.”
Following the team’s win they faced off with township rival Perry Meridian. Perry Meridian was winless until they upset the Cards in the last set.
Leonard believes the win against Wapahani the previous day left the team satisfied and “above Earth.”
“Some of the players acted like this wasn’t going to be a challenge,” Leonard said. “I think after this loss they know that we have to come out every day and really give it our all.”
Then last Saturday the team hosted a tournament, finishing 3-1 in pool play and in third place overall. The teams lone loss was to Chesterton, and it came in the semifinals. Leonard was happy with the way the team bounced back.
Then last night, April 15, the team traveled to Columbus North and lost 3-2 in a tightly fought game. Leonard believes lack of rest and missing team members played a role in the loss.
Leonard hopes the team will be back at full strength tonight when they take on top-ranked Roncalli at home.
The Cards are looking to avenge an earlier 3-0 loss to the Rebels. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
