Baseball team has .500 record following spring break trip

April 8, 2014
Southport High School

The boys varsity baseball team is now 2-2 after spring break. The Cards took a trip to Kentucky last and though the team was originally supposed to play five games, they ended up playing three due to rain. The Cards are a young team starting a couple of freshman and sophomores every game.

The Cards have a batting average of .350. The best batters on the team so far are freshman Jalen Williams, sophomore Luke Johnston and senior Wyatt Cullom. The Cards have a total of 35 hits, 21 runs and 19 RBI’s.

“Williams as a freshman is leading the team in hitting and Johnston is tied with him, so our younger guys have stepped up on this trip,” head coach Mr. Scott Whitlock said.

Whitlock says the team needs to work on coming back when they are behind and also not walking and giving the other team free bases. He says the other team needs to earn every base.

“We are not going to be a strikeout team, but we need to work on not giving so many walks,”  Whitlock said.

The Cards have a game this Friday at North Central that is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Go out and support the Cards.
