Cards basketball team beats Perry Meridian for first round sectional win

March 5, 2014
Southport High School

The boys basketball team beat Perry Meridian for the third time this season, winning in a nail-biter, 57-54 in OT.

Both teams were forced to battle until the last minute with everything on the line, one missed free throw by Perry Meridian with 3.3 seconds left in regulation gave Southport a chance to keep fighting until the end.

It was undoubtedly a close game through all four quarters, and Southport went into halftime down by six. Once Southport caught back up it was back and forth the entire second half.

“We knew we were going to get their best shot. They’ve got nothing to lose, because it’s the last game of season,” head coach Kyle Simpson said after the game.

The key thing to take away from the game, Simpson said, was that no matter what the score was the team didn’t panic and stayed in the game.

According to Simpson, it was a great team effort. Certain players like senior Andrew Clevenger and junior Demari Davis stepped up and contributed to the win.

Southport was able to fight hard, and now they are advancing to the second round of the tournament where they will play Decatur Central, Friday (March 7) at Ben Davis. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. and admission will be $6.

Be sure to come out and support the Cards as they inch closer to the sectional championship.
