Boys baketball team beats Roncalli in penultimate game of season
February 27, 2014Southport High School
The boys basketball team got a big win over Roncalli 65-61, a team Southport lost to previously in the season.
Despite Southport beating a solid team, like Roncalli, head Coach Kyle Simpson doesn’t think it was their best performance. Simpson said if he were to grade the performance he’d give it a C-.
The most important thing to take from this game in Simpson’s eyes is that the team was able to battle for 32 minutes.
Before the game Simpson told his players, “This is going to be a 32 minute war, and they (Roncalli) are going to fight you until the end.”
According to Simpson this is the kind of game the team needed to prepare themselves for the sectional tournament.
Roncalli is a very physical team, and they were able to take away sophomore Joey Brunk, despite his nine points.
According to Simpson junior Malik Bennett didn’t play his best game, but freshman Paul Scruggs and his older brother Nick Scruggs both had solid games. Junior Demari Davis was impressive in his first minutes of the first half scoring five points in six minutes.
“No individual player stood out, it was more of a solid team performance,” Simpson said.
Tonight is the last game of regular season against Terre Haute South, and it is also senior night. Simpson plans on having all of the seniors getting their first start of the season.
Come out and support the Cards in their last home game of the season, and acknowledge the seniors.
