Basketball team holds Bedford scoreless in first, en route to win

February 19, 2014
Southport High School

Last Thursday, Feb. 13, the boys basketball team traveled a long way to Bedford North Lawrence and won, 69-49.

According to Simpson, Bedford is a difficult team to face at home, partially because the hour and a half drive. Even when Simpson coached at Bloomington South, they would struggle when they played there.

By the end of the first quarter the team was already ahead 22-0, which set the tone for the rest of the game. After that point the team maintained a solid ten point lead throughout the rest of the game.

“Our kids had a good frame of mind, and came in and played hard,” Simpson said.

The team spread the ball around well with 21 assists on 26 made baskets.

Junior Malik Bennet’s 15 assistsbroke Cory Wickware’s 2008 record for most assists in a game.

Overall, Simpson thinks it was a good team win, and everyone contributed to the victory.
