February 14, 2014Southport High School
Last Friday, Feb. 7, the boys basketball team triumphed over the township rival Perry Meridian, 71-57.
Perry Meridian started out amped, intending to retaliate for their loss earlier in the season and took the lead at the end of the first quarter 17-9.
This is exactly what head coach Mr. Kyle Simpson predicted to happen, he knew Perry Meridian would come out and start strong.
“I kept telling the guys to take a deep breath, they’ve only won the first lets win the next three,” Simpson told his team at the end of the first quarter.
After that the boys came out and outscored Perry Meridian 17-3 in the second quarter, not allowing a single field goal, the only points scored for Perry Meridian were three free throws. After taking the lead the lead at the half, Southport never gave it up.
According to Simpson, the team responded well and after making a few changes on defense, and played aggressive for the remaining three quarters. By the end of the game they had six steals and 22 rebounds.
“It’s been a long process, but they are understanding that if you don’t care who gets the credit, and you trust your teammates then good things can happen.” Simpson said.
By wining that game Southport has won their first ever Conference Indiana championship title in boys basketball history.
Overall it was a great team win, and the team continues to improve as the sectional tournament gets closer.
