Basketball team goes on road and beats #4 team in 4A

January 29, 2014
Southport High School

The boys basketball team traveled to Mooresville to play a team that is ranked 4th in 4A, and beat them 58-55.

The Cards started strong scoring the first basket of the game, but then found themselves down 9-3 later in the first. The Cards fought back and took the lead by the end of the first and didn’t give it up the rest of the game.

In the final minutes of the game Mooresville started to make a comeback, but they ran out of time.

Head coach Kyle Simpson was pleased with how the team stayed patient, and executed the game.

“They did everything they needed to do in order to beat a team like Mooresville on the road,” Simpson said.

The team spread the ball around exceptionally well, with 15 assists on 21 field goals, but most importantly they only had 10 turnovers.

“When we don’t turn the ball over, and we share the ball, I’d put us against anybody,” Simpson said.

Throughout the year the main issue with the team is that they will have stretches of bad playing, but in this game, according to Simpson, there were only a couple small moments but not nearly as bad as before. This proves that the team is showing some serious growth.

This Friday, Jan. 31, the Cards take on a Columbus North a team similar to Mooresville. Simpson hopes that this win can carry over to Friday in order to get another nice conference win.

Come out and support your Cardinals this Friday as they attempt to keep their winning streak alive.
