Wrestling team finishes eighth in conference, looks to last dual meet of year

January 22, 2014
Southport High School

The wrestling competed in the Conference Indiana meet last Saturday, Jan. 18. The team came in eighth overall, but had two wrestlers finish in the top four in their weight class, and had five guys place overall.

Head coach Mr. David Walpole said the team had its ups and downs on Saturday.

“We did OK,” Walpole said. “We should’ve won certain matches we didn’t and we could’ve done better.”

Walpole said that he is focusing more on the last dual meet of the season tomorrow, Jan. 23, against Speedway. He said that the team is peaking at the right time and that is all that he is worried about.

“We are heading in the right direction,” Walpole said. “Good things will happen if we continue to do what we have been doing.”

The team will host Speedway tomorrow night. Prior to the meet there will be a dedication ceremony for former Southport wrestling coach Chauncey McDaniel. The ceremony will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Cardinal’s Nest.

The wrestling match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Come out and support the wrestling team.
