Swimming team has multiple meets following extended winter break

January 22, 2014
Southport High School

After the extended winter break, due to weather, the Cards swim teams had multiple meets.  The first meet was on Tuesday, Jan. 14, against Greenwood.  According to assistant coach Mr. Josef Horvath, this was one of the hardest meets that the team has had.

“Our team fought hard, but couldn’t pull off the win,” Horvath said. “The girls came in first in most events, but we couldn’t compete with the number of girls they had.  The boys were in a neck-and-neck race going, but we came up short.  The boys lost only by seven points.”

The Cards then went on to face rival school Perry Meridian on Thursday, Jan. 16.  According to Horvath, the team is too small to compete with their rival, so the team had an alternate approach to the meet.

“Their team is a size that our team can’t match, so we swam off,” Horvath said.  “Swimming off is not swimming in a usual event.  Seniors on the team picked the line-up for the meet.  It was a fun meet for the team.”

The next meet was the Conference Indiana meet on Saturday, Jan. 18.  The girls were the only ones at this Conference meet.  The girls came in 8th out of eight teams with a score of 131.  In 1st was Columbus North with a score of 488. According to Horvath, the team swam well for placing last.

“We swam exceptionally well at Conference,” Horvath said.  “We liked our performance, but would’ve loved if we could’ve pulled a few positions higher.  We were only 33 points behind Terre Haute North.”

The Cards most recent game, scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 21, was canceled and will not be rescheduled.

The team’s next meet is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan 28.  The meet will be against Warren Central and Lawrence Central and will be held at Warren Central.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Come out and support the Cards in their efforts.
