Wrestling team improves streak to 8, looks to carry success into conference

January 18, 2014
By Nick Holland of Southport High School

The wrestling team was victorious in their second-to-last dual meet of the year vs. Northwest this past Tuesday, Jan. 14. The final score of the meet was 51-24.

Head coach Mr. David Walpole thought that the kids did really well.

“We got the few pins we were looking for the most part we did really well,” Walpole said.

The team has now won eight straight decisions after starting the season 2-7. Their record is now 10-7.

The team will compete in the Conference Indiana meet today, Jan. 18. Walpole believes that because of the way the season has been going and how younger athletes have been stepping up, that the team can be pretty successful in the conference.

“This is based on how it has been going lately,” Walpole said. “We have had two of our youngest guys step up and be leaders and helped the team become vastly improved.”

Sophomores Micah Wilburn and Devin Dilley are the two wrestlers Walpole credits with the improvement of the team. Both wrestlers have 20 win seasons on the record so far with Dilley racking up 23 prior to the meet today.

Walpole hopes the team can continue to improve and that other wrestlers with step up and drive the team to a high finish in the conference meet.

The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and will take place in the Southport Fieldhouse.

Come out and support the Cards as they compete in the conference.
