Football team remains undefeated
September 24, 2013By Nick Holland of Southport High School
The football team defeated Bloomington South last Friday night to move to 5-0 on the season. Despite the win, the Cards state ranking dropped three places to 11, according to Maxpreps.com.
Senior running back Christian Perry led the team with 250 yards on the ground and sophomore quarterback Luke Johnston added four touchdowns and 200 yards of his own.
Head coach Mr. Bill Peebles thought his team played a pretty solid game.
“We played pretty well I thought,” Peebles said. “We just have to manage our penalties better and the score would have been a lot different.”
The Cards had 17 penalties for 130 yards in the game, more penalty yards than they have had in the first four games combined.
The Cards will be at home next week for the first time in two weeks and will take on Franklin Central. Peebles said the team needs to stop the run if they want to be successful this week.
“FC is a power-running team,” Peebles said. “We have to be strong upfront on both sides of the ball if we want to be successful. Their front four is one of the best units we’ve played all year.”
Peebles said the team will be focusing on offensive alignments and defensive awareness this week.
The Cards will take on the Flashes this Friday, Sept. 27. The game will be home and is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Come out and support the undefeated football team.
