Football team is 4-0 for first time in 30 years
September 16, 2013By Nick Holland of Southport High School
The Southport football team beat Terre Haute North in a double overtime thriller 11-10 last Friday, Sept. 13. With the win the Cards are now ranked 8th overall in the state according to Maxpreps.com.
Head coach Mr. Bill Peebles said that his offense struggled despite the win.
“Our offense missed a lot of opportunities,” Peebles said. “But both defenses played really well. Neither team really did that well on offense.”
Senior running back Christian Perry clinched the game for the Cards with a touchdown run and then a two-point conversion.
Peebles said that despite the win the team needs to execute better offensively if they want to be successful the rest of the way.
“We had uncharacteristic things happen to us on Friday,” Peebles said. “Our offense needs to play better but our defense needs to maintain its intensity as well.”
Peebles said that the team will focus on themselves throughout the week to prepare for Bloomington South this week. He wants the team to focus on execution so that something like Friday doesn’t happen to the team again.
This is the first time Southport has been 4-0 since 1979. The team is now 2-0 in conference and will have another road game this week, in part of four conference games in a row.
The game this Friday will be at Bloomington South. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Come out and support the undefeated Cardinals.
