August 27, 2013Southport High School
The boys tennis team started off their season last week with a win over Decatur Central. They played them Monday, (August 19) and won by a score of 3-2. Winning for the Cards were (senior) Billy Cross at number one singles, the number one doubles team of (junior) Nick Holland and (sophomore) Jared Hunsicker and the number two doubles team of (sophomore) Chase Cawthorne and (freshman) Dane Haynes.
“It was a really good match for being our first one,” head coach Mr. Harry Schwartz said. “We played very well for not having much experience. Two of our varsity players were out due to injury. They should be back in time for the Ben Davis game.”
Next the Cards played Warren Central on Thursday, (August 22). The Cards ended up losing, 1-4, to WC. The one point for the Cards was contributed by Cross at number one singles.
“We had a chance to win,” Schwartz said. “We just didn’t pull out the big plays when we needed to. We just need more experience.”
The Cards lastly went on to face Greenwood yesterday, (August 26). The Cards ended up losing to them, 0-5.
“Even though Greenwood is ranked in the top 20 in the state, we still didn’t play as well as I know we can,” Schwartz said. “In practice we will be working on a lot. We’ll be working on consistency, hitting spots and footwork.”
The Cards next game will be against Ben Davis Wednesday (August 28). The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Ben Davis.
“Ben Davis is always good,” Schwartz said. “All we can do is go out there and give it our best. If we lose, we’ll learn from it.”
Come out and support your Cards tennis team in their efforts against Ben Davis.
