Girls soccer team hopes to set tone for season in first game
August 20, 2013Southport High School
Despite of an unsuccessful season last year, the girls soccer team isn’t planning on rolling over anytime soon. Head coach Mr. Dan McLaughlin is very optimistic about the upcoming season.
Last year was tough for the team, with a record of 2-13-1 there was very little success according to McLaughlin. The main reason behind this was lack of experience he said. Going into the season last year not a single player had ever scored a goal.
“It wasn’t even a rebuilding year because we had nothing to rebuild from,” McLaughlin said.
This year the team lost their captain, McKayla Kuhn, due to graduation.
This year the team has 14 returning varsity letter winners, as opposed to only four the previous year. Key returners are the team captains: seniors Kelsey Newhouse, Maddie Hensley and junior Brandi Ford. McLaughlin expects a lot from these three players on and off the field.
“We will be much better than we were last year, but we will not have a superstar.” McLaughlin said.
The girls soccer team has never had a lot of success, so McLaughlin encourages his players to play with a sense of urgency and pride.
The Lady Cards’ first game is home tonight vs. Mt. Vernon. McLaughlin thinks the first 15 min of the game will set the tone for the rest of the season.
Come out and support your Lady Cards tonight. JV starts at 6, varsity at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be at the Mary Bryan fields.
