Cards baseball team hopeful for tryouts

March 8, 2013
Southport High School

The boys baseball tryouts are scheduled to begin on Monday, March 11. Tryouts will be three days long.

“Tryouts are usually pretty good,” head coach Mr. Scott Whitlock said. “We run our regular practice. We will run through our normal drills that we always do.”

At tryouts Whitlock intends on working with the younger kids, and showing them their daily practice routine, their drills and their offensive and defensive plays.

If the boys can get outside on the field they will scrimmage, if not then they will be indoors and focus more on practicing.

“Looking at who we have coming back,” Whitlock said. “(Senior Taylor) DeHart is a big one for us, he has been a starter for the past couple years. He has been a team leader and second when it comes to hitting.”

Whitlock also expects a lot out of seniors Terry Williams and David Candler.

“We pretty much knew what we had coming back,” Whitlock said. “Unless Vanilla Ice (Dehart) decides he’s going to hit thirty bombs, and I’m not sure Vanilla Ice can do that.”

According to Whitlock there is going to be three teams this year and they only have one diamond.

“We are still waiting on our building to show up,” Whitlock said. “We are down to one field and having three teams on one diamond is a big change.”

The team got a hitting facility donated to them from Southport Little League. The building hasn’t been set up yet and until then the team has one diamond and three teams.

Thursday, the day after cuts, there will be a parent meeting for those who make the team. It will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the IMC.

Come out and support your Cards this season.
