Seniors take skills from one sport and translate them to another
March 7, 2013Southport High School
Seniors Jacob Hunter and David Boyer, though on the volleyball team, couldn’t make try-outs because of their basketball Sectional on the same day. Both Hunter and Boyer are middle hitters for the Cards.
Hunter thinks that volleyball helps contribute to both sports.
“There really isn’t a change between them,” Hunter said. “They are actually closely related, which helps in both sports. Basketball helps with volleyball by improving footwork and the explosion of each movement you make.”
Boyer thinks that volleyball is very similar to basketball.
“They are very similar in many aspects,” Boyer said. “The defensive movements are similar in both sports so that helps a lot. The jumping aspect goes along with both as well.”
Neither of these two players would be on the team however if it weren’t for a Mr. Joe Leonard. According to Boyer, Leonard talked him into playing when he was a freshman when no freshmen were on the team. Also, according to Hunter, he wouldn’t be on the team if it weren’t for Boyer talking him into playing.
Leonard is happy to have them on the team and this is what he thinks about the season ahead of them.
“I think these two will have a great season,” Leonard said. “They should bring senior leadership to the team and help the new varsity players with their year. If we achieve our goal of going to state, then they were a major reason why.”
Come out and support your Cards in their efforts this season.
