Cards basketball team positive about next season
March 7, 2013Southport High School
The boys varsity basketball team finished their season with a 1-19 record.
Head varsity coach Mr. Kyle Simpson thought the team accomplished his expectations in the beginning of the season that the team would improve throughout the season.
“The team played all but one and a half of the games the way I wanted them to play them,” Simpson said.
This was significant to Simpson due to the fact that he only had three points of total offense returning.
“We just had a lot of players that had no varsity experience, but after the first seven games we started to compete in the games,” Simpson said. “Certain games we played in came down to the very last minute.”
The team did beat a good Franklin Community this season according to Simpson.
Simpson believed senior Quinton Sanders had an outstanding season.
“He’s never played varsity basketball until this year and he played hard in every game,” Simpson said.
Sophomore Demari Davis had a good season as well and showed flashes of potential according to Simpson. Other players like junior Thomas Garrett and sophomore Malik Bennett did well this season.
Senior Quinton Sanders however surprised Simpson.
“He came in never playing any varsity basketball and worked hard and accomplished what he set out for,” Simpson said.
The team plans on working out and lifting with the football team in the offseason from spring break all the way through summer conditioning. Simpson wants to get the boys playing on AAU teams. He also wants the team to commit to improving agility and strength.
Key returners coming back for next year according to Simpson are his returning starting lineup along with a few freshmen like Elijah Walton and Janson Benge. Simpson is glad he will have returners that now have guys with experience returning.
Thanks for supporting your Cardinals this season.
