Preview: Boys Golf

March 7, 2013
Southport High School

The boys golf team will be starting Monday, March 11. They will not have tryouts so they will begin the season with practices held at Southern Dunes.

“Although the weather is a factor in practicing,” head coach Mr. Steve Baker said. “The team can still hit balls and putt indoors, if necessary.”

Junior Christian McGail and sophomores Alex Cawthorne and Blake Wagner are the top three key returners for this season according to Baker.

The rest of the team includes four of seven returning lettermen from last year’s team and one new freshman. Those players are, senior Brandon Borden, junior Ethan Carrol, sophomores Nathan Gould and Evan Leach and freshman Chase Cawthorne.

“Although we have a fairly young team,” Baker said. “I have several experienced players and expect to have a very successful season.”

According to Baker the team’s goals are pretty much the same each year.

Baker said he wants to team to have a winning record in dual and three-way matches, and advance as a team to at least the Regionals in the state tournament at the end of the season.

Baker feels confident that the team has the players this year that can accomplish both of those goals.

The team’s first match is scheduled for April 9th against Lawrence Central. Their first tournament is April 13th, at Winding River Golf Course.
